Ararat - Eastern Türkiye Expedition 2024
This summer ACSP will continue to expand our sampling to a new part of the world by ascending two of Türkiye’s highest glaciated stratovolcanoes — Mt. Ararat (5165m) — known as Ağrı Dağı to the Turks — and Mt Suphan (4058m). Both are located in the far eastern reaches of Türkiye near the borders of Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Ararat has great religious and cultural significance in the broader region and has been associated with the biblical story of Noah’s Ark.
Climbers must arrive in Van (IATA: VAN) on or before August 11, and depart no earlier than August 21st. Travel to and from Van will be each participant’s responsibility to arrange, some may wish to spend a few days in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey before their arrival in Van. The price of the expedition will be $975 USD per climber, which will cover all climbing permit fees, meals, government mandated guide, local transportation, and lodging during the trip.
This trip will set the stage for our upcoming 2025 expedition to a 7000m peak in Central Asia. While the routes on Ararat and Suphan are not technical (30-45deg slope), the altitude will be challenging to those traveling from sea level given the short duration of the trip. Acclimatization in advance is recommended to all participants. The weather higher on the mountain can be very cold and windy (70-80km/hr) even in the height of summer, and proper high altitude mountaineering clothing will be required.
